Glucose monitoring technology in primary care: real life application

Speakers: Paul Steel, Roger Lindenmayer, Traci Lonergan, Dr Gary Kilov and Dr Ralph Audehm

Paul Steel is a CDE and has worked as an educator and manager of Diabetes services in the community health sector for over 20 years. His role has been primarily on the management of Type 2 Diabetes, with older adults and CALD communities being a major focus.

His current role as Advanced Clinical Nurse with Bolton Clarke (formerly the Royal District Nursing Service) focuses on individual clinical Diabetes management and collaborative research projects with the acute sector.

Paul has used the Freestyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System extensively with older adults with Type 2 Diabetes as part of a safety and feasibility trial and increasingly with clients with Type 1 Diabetes who reside in Community Residential Units.

Roger Lindenmayer is a Registered Nurse and Credentialled Diabetes Educator with over 20 years experience in Community Health, GP clinics, Private Practice, Remote & Indigenous Health services and clinical research. In his current role at North Richmond Community Health he works closely with GPs in-house and surrounding suburbs, local hospital diabetes services, community mental health services and community nursing services. He is experienced in working with people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and GDM and with complex health and social issues. Many of his patients have used Flash glucose monitoring and CGM and he sees these as useful tools in self-management, education and clinical assessment.

Traci is a Nurse Practitioner specialising in diabetes management in primary care. She has a Clinical Masters in paediatrics and enjoys working with young people and their families living with type 1 diabetes. She was Youth Program Coordinator for Diabetes Tasmania facilitating camps for young people with type 1 diabetes, and Chair of the Diabetes Friendly Schools Steering Committee. Traci’s main interest is technologies for management of diabetes. She shares her time between clinics for people with type 2 diabetes, and private practice which is predominantly focused on people with type 1 diabetes using insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors.

Clinical Associate Professor Gary Kilov (University of Melbourne) is a founding member of both the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Diabetes specific interest group and the primary care diabetes society of Australia (PCDSA). He is a contri

butor to the RACGP diabetes handbook (2012-20)

He is a member of several NDSS (National Diabetes Supply Scheme) Expert Reference Groups

He is the past editor in chief of the PCDSA journal

Associate Professor Kilov shares his time between Launceston treating the full spectrum of patients with diabetes and obesity related conditions and providing peer to peer and medical undergraduate education on diabetes and related conditions.

He is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education both within Australia and internationally. He is widely published in peer reviewed journals on topics covering diabetes, obesity and respiratory medicine.

Dr Ralph Audehm is a general practitioner with over 25 years of experience.

He graduated from The University of Melbourne in 1984 and obtained a Diploma from the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1987. He gained a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research in 2005. In 2004 he was made an Honorary Research Fellow and in 2015 a Clinical Associate Professor of The University of Melbourne.

He has a long-standing interest in the management of diabetes in general practice and has instigated and supported many initiatives to improve health outcomes systematically for people with diabetes in Melbourne’s north-west. Ralph has been a member of numerous boards, expert panels and working parties. He believes that primary health care is central in the effective management of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, and that primary care is best coordinated via general practice.
