The NADC is committed to supporting healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to deliver the highest standard of care to people living with diabetes and that extends beyond the clinic.
Many Australians living with diabetes who are unable to work due to their condition may be entitled to significant financial support through superannuation and insurance. As part of their multidisciplinary care team, healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to help patients recognise and access these entitlements, yet this is an area where clinical teams often lack confidence or awareness.
This free webinar, presented in partnership with specialist superannuation and insurance law firm Berrill & Watson, is designed to bridge that gap.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify when a patient living with diabetes may be eligible for a TPD, Income Protection, or Terminal Illness insurance claim
- Understand the different pathways to accessing superannuation early, including on the grounds of illness, financial hardship, and permanent incapacity
- Explain the distinctions between NDIS, DSP, TPD, and Income Protection and how patients may be eligible for more than one
- Understand what makes an effective and defensible medico-legal report in the context of superannuation and insurance claims
- Recognise red flags that may indicate an insurer is acting improperly or delaying a legitimate claim
- Know when and how to refer patients for specialist legal advice – at no cost to them

MEET OUR SPEAKER
Tom Cobban. He has more than 15 years’ experience as a solicitor working exclusively in superannuation and insurance claims.
He regularly travels around Australia providing advice and assistance to people in rural and regional locations across the country. He also regularly visits clients in Victoria, South Australia and NSW.
Tom has acted for people in many cases in both the Victorian and NSW Courts and in the Federal Courts and has also advocated for people at the Australian Financial Complaints Authority. He has acted in cases against all of the big insurance companies in Australia.
Tom delivers many seminars and public talks and provides pro-bono support and advice for:
- MS Societies in Victoria, SA and Tasmania;
- Disability rights organisations;
- Financial counsellors from many organisations, including the state and national peak bodies;
- CF Together (Cystic Fibrosis); and
- Hospitals around the country, including the Royal Melbourne, Sunshine and Wodonga Hospitals.
Tom is keen to ensure that expert legal assistance with superannuation and insurance claims for people in remote and regional areas is a priority. Whilst primarily working out of our Melbourne office, spending a lot of time in regional Victoria and all areas of South Australia and in Perth is also a priority for him.
