Diabetes in Primary Care: A Practical Webinar Series for GPs

Supporting excellence in type 2 diabetes care across South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network and Bayside Health

This specialist‑led webinar series is designed to support General Practitioners in delivering contemporary and coordinated care for people living with type 2 diabetes and its complications.

Developed in partnership between the Alfred Care Group, Bayside Health, and the South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN), and supported by the National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC) a division of the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS), the series provides practical, case‑based education aligned with Australian guidelines and the realities of general practice.

Across the 10 part series, experienced endocrinologists and multidisciplinary experts will cover the full spectrum of type 2 diabetes management—from early detection and lifestyle intervention to complex pharmacotherapy, technology, and prevention and management of complications including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, foot disease, frailty and atypical diabetes.

  • Practical guidance on medications, insulin, and diabetes technology
  • Integrated care approaches linking primary and tertiary services
  • Case discussions with endocrinologists, GPs, diabetes educators and allied health professionals
  • Sessions aligned to RACGP curriculum and CPD requirements

This series forms part of SEMPHN’s and Bayside Health’s Connecting Care for Complex Chronic Disease (4CD) initiative and aims to strengthen collaboration, improve patient outcomes, and build sustainable diabetes care pathways within the Bayside region.

General Practitioners and members of the general practice team involved in diabetes care.

This program supports the development of best-practice diabetes care while enabling participants to earn RACGP CPD points.

MEET OUR SPEAKERS

Professor Jonathan Shaw. He  underwent his clinical and research training in the UK. He is Deputy Director, Clinical Science at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where his research focuses on epidemiology and clinical research in diabetes, and he is also a consultant physician in the diabetes services. He has authored over 500 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 35 book chapters. He is the Chair of the Diabetes Advisory Group to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Council member of the Australian Diabetes Society, and a Past-President of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group. His awards include the global Novartis Diabetes Award (for research) (2006), the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group Peter Bennett award (2011), the Australian Diabetes Society’s Jeff Flack Diabetes Data award (2015), and the Australian Diabetes Society’s Kellion award (2108). In 2014, he was included in the Thomson Reuters The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds, which listed the 1% most highly cited scientists in the world since 2002. In 2017 and 2018, he was included in the Clarivate list of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers. In 2020, he was listed in the Stanford University listing of the world’s top 2% of researchers.

A/Prof Roy Rasalam. Dr. Roy Rasalam, a clinician researcher, has a special interest in diabetes clinical care and research. He co-authored the Diabetes Australia & RACGP type 2 diabetes national guidelines. With over 25 years of clinical experience, he currently holds a clinical appointment with the Endocrinology & Diabetes Department at Alfred Health, Melbourne. Dr. Rasalam is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and actively contributes to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His specialty areas are diabetes and heart disease.

Tracy Orr. Tracy Orr is an Australian-based health professional. Tracy is trained as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE). She is passionate about supporting people with diabetes, prediabetes, and PCOS to achieve their health goals. With an open, empathetic, and positive approach, she provides support, encouragement, and evidence-based education when needed. Recognising that achieving balance in life can be challenging, especially when living with a chronic condition, she aims to help people find a balance that is right for them.

Emily Clarke. Australian Accredited Practising Dietitian
Emily Clarke is an Accredited Practising Dietitian in Australia from the Monash University FODMAP Team. Monash University is the leading research centre for the Low FODMAP Diet.

Professor Anthony Russell. Prof Russell (MBBS, PhD, FRACP) is the Director of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Alfred Health. He is Professor in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Prof Russell is an academic clinician and has a research interest in models of care and use of enabling technology. 

Prof Russell completed his PhD in adipocyte biology at the University of Queensland in 2004. He was Director of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Princess Alexandra Hospital 2005 to 2021.

Professor Bamini Gopinath

Professor Bamini Gopinath is the inaugural Cochlear Chair in Hearing and Health. In this role she leads the Public Health and Policy Pillar of MU Hearing. She is an epidemiologist who has been actively involved in developing and conducting numerous population health studies. To date she has co-authored over 240 peer-reviewed papers, several of which have been in high-ranking medical and health journals (with over 5800 citations to her name). Her publications have attracted >400 media stories with an estimated audience of 210 million people worldwide. Using large population datasets Bamini has provided novel community-based evidence on the health determinants and health outcomes associated with a sensory loss and disability. Her ongoing research in the public health field aims to translate key study findings into health policy and practice, with the intention of targeting current gaps that exist in Australian healthcare. Through the lens of public health, Bamini’s program of research aims to: a) improve support for people with hearing loss; b) ensure early intervention; c) improve engagement with hearing services and aural rehabilitation; and d) prevent the development of hearing loss and minimise its progression.
